Swallowing & Digestion

Some of our findings here were, of course, obvious. For instance, larger dogs can swallow bigger chunks of food substances than smaller dogs. However, other factors of swallowing and digestion were highly impactful on our research. Two of these are:

  • The weaker bite force of smaller dogs tends to lead to less chewing and more gulping of large pieces.
  • While bigger dogs are more able to chew and swallow food thoroughly, they have a shorter digestive tract and need for food to break down quickly as it passes through.

  • Both of these needs are addressed in new Greenies™ dental chews. The smaller products feature a softer texture, to encourage chewing in even the weakest jaw type in these weight classes. And the harder textures in our largest sizes solubilize quickly in the digestive tract, to help large breeds get maximum nutritional benefit from the product.
