Skull Types

There are three major skull types found across all breeds of dogs. These types are characterized as follows:

  • Brachycephalic dogs display a short-nosed, more compact type of jaw structure. This includes bulldogs, Chihuahuas, Pekinese and pugs.
  • Mesaticephalic dogs make up the greater part of the canine population. This skull type features a moderate jaw structure and length, and is found in dogs like beagles, Labradors, and golden retrievers.
  • Dolichocephalic dogs are the long-nosed dogs, with a narrow jaw structure. Greyhounds, whippets and dachshunds are some of the dogs that make up this category.

Looking at the natural mechanics of chewing in each of these skull types formed the basis of much of our theories on dental chew formulation and design.
